While online you probably have seen the four-letter abbreviation “NSFW” and may have wondered what it means. The letters stand for Not Safe For Work. The meaning is simple: Content labelled as “NSFW” could place you into jeopardy at work if your boss or fellow employees saw you looking at it.
Typically, NSFW is a catch-all label that refers to images which depict nudity and/or violence. Any other kinds of taboo subjects depicted in images can get the NSFW label even if there is no nudity or violence content. This could include depictions which are of a social and political nature that touch upon topics one normally does not discuss in “polite society.”
If you work remotely (not at an office of your employer) but you use a laptop provided to you or owned by your employer, you should expect that device may be monitored without you even being aware of the monitoring. If you download NSFW images or text or audio or video content from the internet to that company, you should expect to get into jeopardy with your boss.
